  I agree completely with your and the other article's assertions that health insurance is a rip-off for young people. In my 20s I would decline the company-provided insurance because they wanted too much out of my paycheck for it. I would simply self-insure if I needed to go to a doctor.
  I hate subsidizing other people's medical expenses. I would rather see individual HSAs (health savings accounts) than this bottomless pit that is health insurance.

  I actually fall into the category of young and uninsured, but it's not by choice, exactly. I've been covered under group plans before, but getting a policy of my own is what I really want to do so that it can't end based solely on where I work. For a number of years I was voluntarily uninsured and I enjoyed it immensely, but now the time for some doctoring seems to be coming up so I have to figure out this maze of options.

  What about the white make population that is working at a small business that does not have health care, no dependants, gets injured by an unlicensed, uninsured motorist with no $$ and the victim does not qualify for medicaid since trying to work and not rely on government food stamps, welfare, etc? Doctors will not see people without health insurance unless they self pay. Unless you sit on your butt and do nothing- you get no assistance. I have checked every program of assistance and denied due to: trying to work, if he has surgery- he will not be permanently disabled, was rlated to motor vehicle accident, health insurance has 12 month pre-existing wait. There are pot holes in our system that need to be fixed. It is not fair that aliens can come into the country and obtain assistance when US born citizens get denied for trying not to rely on the government.

  Many people don't need insurance,OK. You said that you did not need insurance when you were in your 20s, but how about the people who are born with problem, people who suffer from epilepsy,asthma,and diabetes. Those people were born with those problem, they didn't not just wake up and said 'I'm going to eat a lot of sugar so I could have diabetes. people who have epilepsy, and don't have health insurance have to pay for expensive medicine, that cost about $600. There are medicine in the hospital that cost you about $15000 dollars depending in the strength of the drug. I'm telling you this because I work in the pharmacy of a hospital. I have seen the cost of those medicines,So when you say many people don't need health insurance, don't just think about yourself.
