Who in the world said that our system is perfect? In fact, our system is just and fair because is isn't perfectionist - that is, we do not sacrifice all other social values for one particular value. We don't optimize freedom at the total expense of equality and we don't optimize equality at the total expense of freedom. That is what REASONABLE means.

As far as whether or not we are a capitalist society, that is how we identify ourselves, and for good reason. And I wouldn't have it any other way.

I agree 100% with you Alan. My answer relative to Fox and Coulter wasn't really in response to your question (my English needs to improve; sometimes I'm confusing even myself ). It was more a kind of general remark and an example of vitriol elements in US. Of course both sides have some blame and some Democrats can be unpleasant and even harsh from time to time. However, irrationality and fear are some of the Republicans trade marks and it leads to excessive language and behaviors. If criticizing our own country is wrong and anti-patriotic, if trying to find some solutions to make our country progress and improve is marxism, if questionning our good and wrong doings deserve mud slinging, when will it be possible to put a grown-up discussion on the table? Of course I'm Canadian but I love the United States for a lot of reasons and one of them is the beacon of hope the US represents in the world. However, compassion and openminded is necessary to do the job. The right wing makes me pessimistic about the result.

ddisanass, Denise D. has a very good point of view, and you might want to take it serriously. She recomends REASONABLE capitalism. The idea of the REASONABLE as a constraint on the RATIONAL is a very important consideration. The real difference between the system of governence that we have and those of "Fascism" and "Communism" is that we are not rational extreamists, rather we are reasonable.

Libertarianism may be just as extream as Fascism and Communism, if the value of freedom is pushed to its limit, and is not compromised by other social values in a REASONABLE way.

If you are interested in the distinction between the rational and the reasonable, I suggest you take a look at John Rawls. His Lectures on the History of Political Philosopy would be a good source.

Available, by the way, at that great American communist/fascist institution, the public library, for free.

Denise, Ann Coulter is a Republican, not a Democrate. I was wondering if there were examples of Democratic vitrol. Maybe what was meant by "democrate" in the post above is "democratic process". In which case, I agree, it has been rather uncivil. And, as always, both sides have some blame. But it was the Republican's, not the Democrates, who made name calling and mud slinging their basic strategy. It seemed to be all they had.

PS - I absolutly, positively, have NEVER watched FOX News or listened to Ann Coulter comments. That would be irrational, as well as painful.

I am personally offended by Mr. Franken being referred to as an Ex-Comedian. In order to be an Ex-comedian he would have to have been intentionally funny. Laughing at a poor mentally unstable individual is offensive, it does not make him a comedian.

Can you give an example of democratic vitrol? I remember getting quite a few hate e-mails from my paleo-conservative republican relatives, but nothing like that from the democrats. I'm sure it existed to some degree, but I don't recall it being in-your-face and upfront like the paleo-conservatives.

I am a Conservative voting Canadian (which in American terms means I vote for a party slightly to the left of Democrats). It is none of my business and probably not my right to say but, watching your election from afar, I was flabbergasted at the vitriol, hatred and intolerance for dissenting opinion that democrat supporters have displayed during and indeed after the election. America has long been a democratic beacon of hope to the world and I fear that the comportment of the left has lowered the bar so much that we may not see a recovery to healthy political discussion and dissent in my lifetime. Off topic but relevant to some of the comments previously posted: Canada has a sizeable contingent of troops on the ground in Afghanistan and is one of the few Nato countries helping to do the heavy lifting in combat-heavy areas. Although I agree that our armed forces are not anywhere near the size of our American friend's our forces are performing bravely and honourably in that theatre and have paid the price in blood.
